How Do You Make A Back-up Copy Of Your Web Site?
Solution
If your Web Site changes often, back it up often!
Remember, the reason to have a back-up copy is to save you time in the event of a problem. The more recent your back-up copy is, the more time it will save you. We recommend creating your site on your computer and making all changes on your computer, then uploading them or publishing them to the server. This will ensure that you always have a recent back-up of your site.
Do not attempt to back up a FrontPage Web Site by simply copying the folders that make up the web, using the FTP or the Internet Explorer method. Although there are cases in which this will work, there are cases where it will not work BUT it will look like it did, resulting in a bad back-up copy. To ensure that your back-up copy is as good as your original, use the methods described here:
How to Back-up your site using FTP:
------------------------------------------------
Using your favorite FTP software connect to the web server using:
FTP HOST: yourdomain.com
USERNAME: your_userid
PASSWORD: your_password
Select all directories on the remote server and download them to a folder locally in your computer.
Please check the documentation on your FTP software for more information.
How to Back-up your site using Internet Explorer:
------------------------------------------------
Open Internet Explorer and go to:
ftp://username@domain.com (i.e.: ftp://hc5555@mydomain.com)- You will be password promted.
Or - Open Internet Explorer and go to:
ftp://username:password@yourdomain.com (i.e.: ftp://hc5555:pass@mydomain.com)
You will be prompted for your password. Once it connects you should see your files and folder, they will look like other folders in your computer. You can then simply copy and paste or drag and drop those folders and files out of the browser window and into a folder in your computer.
How to Back-up your site using FrontPage:
----------------------------------------
(Instructions will vary depending on your version of FrontPage)
Open your FrontPage
Go to FILE then OPEN WEB.
For the FOLDER NAME or WEBSITE NAME that you want to Open,
type:
.(It should prompt you for your username and password.)
Once you have successfully logged on, go to FILE then PUBLISH WEB
When it asks you where to publish it to, click on the BROWSE button and look for your C: drive or whatever drive you use in your computer.
Look for the folder you want the files dropped in and select OPEN or OK.
Select PUBLISH and it should publish your site back to your computer.
If FrontPage asks you if you want to convert the folder in your computer to a web, select YES.
